Safety tips for sharing the road with bicyclists

Summertime is here, and that means you will see more bicycles on the roads. Bicycles legally have a right to be on the roadway and share the same lanes as vehicles. However, bicyclists are at a greater risk of injury in the event of a collision with a vehicle, which is why its important for motor vehicle operators to know and understand how to safely share the road with bicyclists.

Tips to safely drive alongside bicyclists

  • Keep a safe distance: You want to make sure you are giving bicyclists plenty of space when you are driving next to them. Just like you would for another vehicle, maintain a safe following distance and only pass when it is safe to do so.
  • Watch your speed: Especially when passing a bicyclist, make sure to be mindful of your speed as well as your distance from the bicycle. The wind from your car can cause the bicycle to shift or get sucked in, so make sure if you can’t be a safe distance from the bike that you are slowing your speed to get around them.
  • Be vigilant: Check your blind spot (don’t just use your mirrors) before changing lanes, watch out when making turns (especially right turns) and be cautious when opening your car door when parked on the side of the street to try to avoid collisions with bicycles.
